Homestead Design has completed many area "Build-to-Suit" commercial projects including churches, medical clinics, offices, restaurants, retail establishments and car dealerships. We offer full "turnkey" services including design, permitting, and construction; at very competitive rates.

Essex Town Center and HDI

Homestead Design has collaborated with the citizens and planners of Essex for many years to develop a new Town Center. It is a physical and psychological "Center" for Essex that encourages a mix of uses and has a diverse dynamic and people oriented environment incorporating residential, retail, office, and commercial uses. The award winning plan, developed by Essex, was prepared in 1991 as part of an Act 250 approved town plan.

Current uses include a bank, restaurants, service and retail outlets, and professional offices in combination with over 50 residential units.

Essex Town Center Site and Location

The Essex Town Center is bounded by Route 15, Essex Way, Billie Butler Drive and the Essex Shoppes & Cinema. Main features are two intersecting main streets, Carmichael Street and Commonwealth Ave., a continuous linear park along Route 15 incorporating a bike path and two historic structures, and a town “green”. Extensive short-term angled parking along both main streets as well as long term mass parking support an environment emphasizing diverse, interesting architecture and uses within a pedestrian friendly environment. Sidewalks along Carmichael Street and Commonwealth Ave. will be wide with trees, handsome street lights and furniture.

The buildings within the Essex Town Center are a mix of 1, 2, and 3 story structures using traditional New England materials and detailing. HDI's goal in developing the center is to create a healthy economic and physical environment that captures some of the warmth and diversity present in the best historic downtowns of Vermont.
